An article published on WebMD News detailed how a study found a fix for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) unsuitable:
The new study affirms the common perception among doctors that steroid shots serve as only a temporary fix for patients with moderate or severe cases of carpal tunnel syndrome, Ruch said.
“The long-term ability of carpal tunnel syndrome to be treated with an injection is really based upon the severity of your symptoms, how long the symptoms have been in place and how old you are,” he said.
The new research, from doctors at Hassleholm Hospital in Sweden and published in the Sept. 3 issue of the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, involved 111 patients aged 18 to 70 with carpal tunnel syndrome who had no previous steroid injections.
Within 10 weeks, people who received steroid injections were less likely to report pain, numbness, tingling or other symptoms.
Three out of four patients who received steroids, however, needed surgery within one year.
This piece of information provides a new outlook on carpal tunnel syndrome treatment and a more positive opinion of alternative methods, such as visiting a Memphis chiropractor for therapy.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a medical condition that can afflict anyone who uses and overworks their hands while doing labor. The neuropathy in the median nerve of the hand can cause pain, numbness and burning sensations in the thumb and fingers.
Steroid shots are usually utilized by doctors to help rule out other possible medical conditions. As much as these shots provide immediate relief, they must not become the go-to solution for the syndrome.
Severe CTS requires surgery, but there is a good chance of relapse even in the mildest cases. A good way of fighting the syndrome is through wrist splints and curing underlying conditions. Another way is through chiropractic treatment.
Chiropractic therapy employs different methods of helping cure CTS and prevent surgery, such as ultrasound therapy, and spine, wrist and elbow manipulation. Improvements were achieved within six months of therapy.
For patients who are afraid of going under the blade to cure carpal tunnel syndrome, they can talk to a reliable chiropractor in Memphis, such as Chiropractic Menphis, which can provide them relief from CTS and other problems with the joints.
